Aharon Megged

Aharon Megged

When looking at different Israeli authors that depict and represent our culture we chose from the works of Aharon Megged. In many of Megged’s literary works he covers the preoccupation with the Jewish identity from which the "new Jew," the Sabra, has sought to free himself in the State of Israel. Having served as the Israeli cultural attaché in London and Writer in Residence at Haifa University and Oxford, Megged’s writing theme began to largely reflect the changing face of Israel. Megged’s literary awards include the Brenner Prize, the Agnon Prize, the Wizo Prize, in France, for Foiglman, the Israel Prize (2003) as well as several others.

Israel, a nation formed by the Jews, was established as a direct result of the horrific occurrences during the Holocaust. In our story, The Name, Megged depicts some of the cultural and emotional issues that arose when the next generation grew up in the land of  Israel.
