I. Working alone or in pairs, choose 3-4 poems that relate to the same topic. (One poem may be taken from The ECB Anthology.)
A. Read, study, analyze, compare and contrast the poems.
B. Find background information about each author and one source of
interpretation for each poem.
II. Write a 3-4 page typed paper (2.5 cm margin on all sides, Arial 12 pt font, double-spaced, numbered pages) which includes:
A. An introduction to your topic
B. A brief biography of each poet.
C. A brief summary of each poem (3-5 sentences)
(Include: i. What is the subject? ii. How is it developed? iii. What is the concluding idea?
D. An analysis of each poem with at least 2 references to some of the
images and language ( Refer to Poetry Terminology)
E. A comparison of the various poems (3-4 paragraphs)
i. How each poem relates to the topic
ii. How the style and technique of each poem is similar/different
F. A conclusion which includes a reflection on why these specific poems were chosen
III. In addition to the paper, include:
i. a cover page, ii. typed copies of the poems, iii. a bibliography, (How to - Duke University Libraries - Citing Sources Guidelines) and iv. a table that summarizes the comparison of the poems.
What topics interest you? Where can you find poetry texts? Where can you find reliable analyses of the poems?
SSummarize the information you have found, making sure to keep a bibliographical record of each source. (How to - Duke University Libraries - Citing Sources Guidelines) or try the Slate Citation Machine. Keep in mind how you are going to present your project when you gather and summarize your information.
Organize your ideas in a logical, coherent manner including the analytical resources. Use the table to help you organize your thoughts. Follow the instructions from the Task Definition.

Choose one of the poems that you studied and give a 5-10 minute
presentation to the class.
